Zipp Rebuild
INTRODUCTION
Here at Strada we continue to receive a steady stream of Zipp rebuilds. This popular wheel make has had a number of hub redesigns over the years to address weaknesses that have arisen. However, with the sheer number of Zipp wheels in circulation, hub failures occur. A Zipp rebuild by Strada, resolves these issues by upgrading you to a new quality hub for improved performance and durability.
Hub failure
Zipp rebuilds can be the result of the hub flange fracturing by being overstretched or due to poor spoke tension or inexperienced mechanics work. The image below is a typical failure. The driveside flange is under the greatest load and this combined with a low spoke count leads to early failure.
Preload adjuster failing
A Zipp rebuild can be due to the preload adjuster coming loose regularly. You keep tensioning it up and it keeps coming loose however much threadlock is applied. This is a common Zipp hub fault. Of course, a loose preload adjuster does not help bearing life. This can be in conjunction with the hub “eating” bearings with alarming regularity. Swapping to a better quality hub can resolve these Zipp wheel issues.
Better power transfer
Careful hub selection allows us to offer better power transfer as the optimal flange placement gives this well made rim a chance to give the rider its best performance. A Zipp rebuild can have extra benefits!

Better serviceability
The wheel usually arrives for a Zipp rebuild with the nipples bonded onto the spokes with an overly strong spoke Loctite being used. This ensures the nipples won’t rattle loose but it makes it really hard to adjust tensions in the workshop. We have to cut out the spokes and remove the nipples from inside the rim. Once this has been done we can commence the Zipp wheel rebuild with fresh Sapim CX Ray spokes in silver or black.
Hub choices for your rebuild
We can rebuild your Zipp wheel with a number of suitable hubs.
- For the 20 spoke rear wheels – the Hope RS4 (in six colours) is a good choice – it offers good flange placement allowing us to ensure even spoke tension between the drive and non drive side of the wheel. With a low spoke count wheel like the Zipp this is important to allow all the spokes to work together driving the wheel forward.
- Second option is the Chris King R45 which can be fitted. This is a more expensive rebuild. On 24 spoke rear wheels – in addition to those hubs already listed, we can use the DT Swiss 240 or DT Swiss 180 hub if the rear wheel has 24 spokes. Or we can go completely off piste like with this Zipp 808 rebuild with a Phil Wood track hub. We can rebuild the front to match too of course.
Zipp decals
After a Zipp rebuild we can refresh the look too with a set of genuine Zipp decals. Available at £40 per wheel fitted we can use the latest white or black Zipp decals or colour coordinate.

11 speed upgrade
Your Zipp rims may be in good condition but the hub cannot be upgraded to an 11 speed freehub and so the only option then is to go for an 11 speed rebuild to keep it in use. In the image below we removed the original hub from this Zipp 404 Firecrest Tubular and swapped to a DT Swiss 180 allowing the rider to use a new 11 speed groupset and his Zipps rebuilt offering super smooth high quality hubs with long service times and snappy engagement.
