ENVE M60 Forty PLUS

Despite the impressive claimed weights, the ENVE M60 Forty Plus is a rim designed for aggressive trail riding. As with their other M-Series rims, the numbers in the model name refers to the split of descending to climbing. So in this case, the ENVE M60 Forty Plus is targeted towards riders who split their riding into 60% descending, and 40% climbing. They’re not full-blown downhill rims, but they’re not skinny XC rims either. ENVE see its new plus wheelset finding its way onto short to mid-travel plus compatible mountain bikes.

Because tyre manufacturers are using lightweight casings and sidewalls to ensure their high volume 2.8/3.0in plus tyres don’t end up as heavy as a 2-ply downhill tyre. The goal is to reduce rotational mass to achieve a lighter and more playful feel on the trail, but in this case the trade off from using a thinner carcass comes in the form of pinch flats and overall tyre durability.

“ENVE took note of these compromises in tyre design that are intended to keep the tyres light and rideable, and set out to design a rim that would allow the system to maintain a competitive weight and aid in the reduction of pinch flats.” – ENVE Composites.

To accomplish this, they chose a shallower depth of 25mm for the ENVE M60 Forty Plus rim, with a specific carbon layup that would encourage compliance. A more compliant rim equals more comfort on the trail, but it also reduces the stress placed onto the tyre casing when you’re bashing about into sharp rocks. Further shaping of the 4.5mm thick hookless beads was used to make the rim as forgiving as possible.

WHO IS IT FOR?

Riders looking for the ultimate Plus wheel ride will find that the ENVE M60 Forty Plus provides the big wheel roll-over performance of 29” wheels in a more forgiving package. This means more traction, comfort, and confidence for riders of all levels.

WHY DID WE MAKE IT?

Plus bikes are really fun, however they are more fun and consequently fast when you have a wheelset that is both stiff, light, and highly durable. The M60 Forty Plus is designed to provide an optimised rim solution for 2.8” to 3.0” Plus tyres so that your wide wheel platform can also feel light and nimble allowing you to go further, faster.

Is wider always better? You’’d think so given recent trends in the bike industry. However, the answer to that question is more complex and wheels play an integral role in answering that question for the Plus bike platform. The ENVE M60 Forty Plus is a carbon fibre tubeless clincher with a 40mm internal width and has been designed and engineered specifically for the 2.8 to 3.0 inch plus size tyres on the market. While thoughtful carbon fibre construction allows for weight savings and enhanced stiffness, the ENVE M60 Forty Plus is a 480 gram rim that can resist impacts on par with the bar setting Enduro wheel the M70. Another feature of the M60 Plus rim is a new hookless bead design that greatly reduces the possibilities of pinch flatting.

Technical – ENVE go to great lengths to ensure that their rims are built to the highest standards using the latest technology and techniques. Unlike other carbon rim manufacturers ENVE  have a moulding process for the spoke and valve holes, this means that the carbon fibres are continuous around the holes allowing for maximum spoke tension. ENVE also mould in a conical nipple seat reducing spoke breakage due to increased nipple articulation. To achieve the incredibly low weights we have all come to expect from ENVE, they have created a removable bladder system which means that no debris is left inside the rim, saving weight for you and making our job of building them easier. All of this is done onsite in Utah, where ENVE regularly torture test their rims, both laterally and with spoke tests, so that their rims meet the UCI guidelines.
